Inviting the Gods to the Show: The Puppetry Street Special Exhibition

Exhibition Overview and Cultural Significance : This exhibition revisits the flourishing 1950s glove puppetry cluster centered around Liangzhou Street in Dadaocheng, capturing the unique neighborhood culture born from the tradition of “inviting troupes for thanksgiving rituals.” During this golden era, puppet troupes established liaison offices within local businesses, creating a vibrant cultural network that linked teahouses, shops, and performance spaces. By intertwining folk faith with commercial activity and daily life, this district evolved into the famous “Puppetry Street,” a cornerstone of Taipei’s historical identity.

Featured Content and Visitor Information: Focusing on legendary troupes such as “亦宛然”, “小西園 ” , and “哈哈笑 ” , the showcase features a rich collection of puppets, musical instruments, historical artifacts, and audiovisual archives that reveal the industry’s inner workings. Organized by the Taipei City Arts Promotion Office and held at the Dadaocheng Theater (8F, Yongle Market), the exhibition offers an immersive experience with atmospheric spaces and multilingual guides. Admission is free and open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 to 17:00, until December 6, 2026.
